The sharp at the start
The G major scale is G-A-B-C-D-E-F♯-G. Instead of writing ♯ next to every F, music puts one sharp on the F line at the very start. That's the key signature: it applies to every F in the piece.
Same fingering as C major: 1-2-3, tuck, 1-2-3-4-5.
