Syncopation puts the strong note between beats. Ragtime lives on it: the left hand keeps a strict march on the beat, the right hand pushes against it.

Legato = smoothly connected (don't release until the next note sounds). Staccato = short and detached (bounce off the key). Use the mic's level meter to hear the difference.
